Our
Story
DASTRUP was inspired by the story of a remarkable young woman named Heather, whose journey highlights the critical need for compassionate and attentive caregiving. Born with multiple disabilities—blind, deaf, non-verbal, and requiring total care—Heather faced immense challenges in her daily life. Unable to communicate her needs or advocate for herself, she relied entirely on those around her for support.

For years, Heather lived in various host homes, hoping to find stability and care. However, in some of these placements, her basic needs were overlooked. Her clothing was often worn and unkempt, not out of malice but simply because she had no way to express discomfort or request help. Small details, which many take for granted, were left unnoticed, reinforcing how vulnerable individuals like Heather can be in the absence of truly attentive caregivers.
Her experience became a driving force behind DASTRUP’s mission: to ensure that no individual with disabilities is left unheard, unseen, or without proper care. Inspired by Heather’s resilience, DASTRUP was founded to create a program that prioritizes dignity, independence, and personalized support.
Today, the organization is dedicated to matching individuals with caregivers who are not just qualified, but deeply committed to recognizing and addressing each person’s unique needs—ensuring that stories like Heather’s become ones of empowerment rather than neglect.
